The Guidelines for Serving Students with Emotional Disturbance in Educational Settings is intended to serve as a resource for IEP teams looking to comprehensively address the needs of this population of students. Research has pointed to a direct correlation between low income status and emotional disorders, but the exact reasons for this correlation are unknown. Characteristics. Emotional Disturbance. Strategies. It is important to implement strategies that address the needs of the individual. This presentation briefly describes characteristics, teaching strategies, and research-based interventions for students with emotional behavior disorders. Emotional and behavior disorders in children covers a broad spectrum, including children with aggressive or disruptive behavior, oppositional defiant disorder, problems with self-injury and other conditions. In order to effectively teach children with behavioral disorders, teachers need to be well-prepared with modified lesson plans, instructional tactics and techniques. I am currently teaching young adolescents, many with significant emotional and behavioral challenges. To facilitate a predictable and consistent environment, we create class guidelines, procedures, and engagement systems so each student knows the class expectations and routines.
